Edinburgh is set to host a special seminar which will aim to help Scottish FinTech businesses gain an edge in the growing sector.

The event, hosted by intellectual property specialists Marks & Clerk, is entitled ‘FinTech: Protecting Your Intellectual Property’ and will take place at The Dome on George Street on 24 September.

Speakers will be offering unique insights and interactive presentations, while considering current industry debates at the only event of its kind in Scotland.

Patent attorneys from Marks & Clerk, including Pamela Bryer, Tim Hargreaves, Franziska Luckert and Alistair Robertson, will provide practical advice on protecting your intellectual property (IP) and how this can exploited to give businesses a competitive advantage.

Patent attorney Pamela Bryer said: “IP must be considered a key building block for companies operating across a range of technical fields and that includes FinTech.

“Amid a vibrant and successful Scottish scene, many thousands of FinTech-related software patents have already been granted and this often represents a vital edge for businesses looking to compete in such a fiercely demanding industry.

“Having acted for a leading multinational payment solutions provider for many years, I have a significant interest and in-depth experience of FinTech needs and I’m looking forward to sharing this with start-ups and established businesses from across Edinburgh and wider Scotland.

“My colleagues Tim Hargeaves and Alistair Robertson have years of expertise of patenting software across a wide range of tech-based sectors and are also keen to share the latest in beneficial IP innovations for growing companies.”

She added: “While IP means different things to different companies, one thing remains the same – it has a crucial role to play in facilitating growth. IP needs are ever-changing and considerations will constantly evolve over a business cycle.

“So whether you’re only just starting to consider how best to protect and exploit your ideas, or you’re experienced and want to make sure you’ve got your finger on the pulse, this event is suitable for anyone with an interest in FinTech innovation.”
