Energy giant Chevron announces Aberdeen exit

US energy giant Chevron has confirmed it will close its Aberdeen office, bringing its 55-year history in the city to an end.

The move is part of a global restructuring plan aimed at achieving £2.1 billion in savings by 2026, which is expected to reduce the company’s worldwide headcount by up to 20%.

The Marischal Square office, which currently houses what the company describes as a “small specialist team”, is scheduled to close between December 2025 and December 2026. While the precise number of job losses has not been disclosed, the decision follows Chevron’s announcement last year to sell its remaining North Sea oil and gas assets.

A company spokesperson stated the closure is a consequence of simplifying its organisational structure to “improve efficiency, drive stronger competitive performance and enhance our long-term competitiveness”.

This exit from Aberdeen marks a significant shift for the firm, which sold its UK North Sea business to Ithaca Energy in a £1.6 billion deal in 2019. That transaction saw 450 employees, including 200 offshore, transfer to Ithaca.

Despite ceasing operations in Aberdeen, Chevron will maintain its London base, which it considers “an important regional hub”.

Reflecting on the company’s long history in the Granite City, a spokesperson said: “We are very proud of our long legacy in Aberdeen, and we appreciate the technical expertise and many talented people connected to our Aberdeen office who have contributed to Chevron’s success.”
