Glasgow businesses welcomed by Mayor of Shanghai

A delegation of business leaders from across Glasgow has been officially welcomed by the Mayor of Shanghai, Mr Gong Zheng, as the city takes up the role of Guest City of Honour at the China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair (CSITF).
The invitation to China follows a visit to Glasgow in April 2024 by Mr Huang, chairman of the Shanghai Enterprise Confederation, who proposed Glasgow to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce to be the Guest City of Honour for CSITF which takes place from 11 to 13 June in Shanghai.
Business leaders representing organisations including Glasgow Airport, Glasgow Life, the University of Strathclyde, the University of Glasgow, City of Glasgow College, Edrington, Techworks, CMS, Peak Scientific and Savills China as well as a number of Scottish SME’s were in attendance, reflecting growing ambitions to increase Scottish exports to the Chinese market.
The Team Glasgow exhibition showcased the very best of the city’s innovation and industry, with a number of cooperation agreements already underway.
The Glasgow delegation to CSITF 2025 is being led by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce with Glasgow City Council, as part of the International Trade Partnership, supported by the Scottish Government and Scottish Chambers of Commerce.
This year’s CSITF focuses on three key sectors: intelligent manufacturing, biomedical science, and green and low-carbon technologies – all areas closely aligned with Glasgow’s expertise and economic growth priorities.
Richard Muir, deputy chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is one of the largest delegations of business leaders we have taken on a trade mission, which reflects the scale of opportunity Shanghai presents for firms looking to grow and expand internationally.
“The ‘Team Glasgow’ approach, involving representatives from the Glasgow Chamber, Glasgow City Council and UK government, and a broad range of Glasgow businesses, has proved highly effective in maximising the potential of these international engagements.
“We have already signed several Memoranda of Understanding, creating a foundation for long-term business partnerships and collaborations.”
Councillor Christina Cannon, Convener for Education and Early Years at Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow is delighted to be in Shanghai as the guest city of honour, strengthening partnerships and opening new doors for Glasgow-based businesses in AI-driven industries, green energy, and intelligent marine engineering.
“Our collaboration with Shanghai, alongside our partnership with the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, creates a strong foundation to continue advancing innovation, expanding global opportunities, and developing stronger economic links.”
