Glasgow chefs raise over £5,500 for mental health charity

Four of Glasgow’s top chefs teamed up to raise more than £5,500 for a mental health charity supporting hospitality workers.

Peter McKenna, chef-owner of The Gannet, Ajay Kumar, chef-owner of Swadish and Grilled, Gary Townsend, chef-owner of Elements, and Graeme Brown of Glaschu, served up a charity dinner on 13 November, for Hospitality Health.

The chefs collaborated on a four-course fine dining menu at Glaschu on Royal Exchange Square, that infused each of their individual styles with seasonal Scottish produce.

The sold-out event raised thousands for the Glasgow charity, that will benefit many.

Gordon McIntyre MBE, founding chairman of Hospitality Health, said: “We are absolutely overjoyed at the success of the fundraising event with the top four Glasgow chefs - the food was outstanding and so was the generosity of the amazing guests.

“We managed to raise over £5,500 which was well above what we could have imagined. This will be used to fund valuable places for staff in the hospitality industry on Mental Health First Aid certificate courses. The chefs were incredible and produced some of the best dishes I have seen in a long while.”

The menu served at Glaschu included seasonal canapés with Champagne – donated by Perrier-Jouët – and sourdough, bread gifted by local business Freedom Bakery.

Chef McKenna served a cured halibut dish, followed by BBQ Calcutta pork belly from chef Kumar. Chef Townsend created a dish with Scottish venison and dessert by Glaschu’s own chef Brown was a dark chocolate and manuka honey tarte.

A raffle auction with prizes including a Chef’s Table experience at Virgin Edinburgh for eight  guests and a Clydeside Distillery tour and tasting, helped towards the final amount raised.

Hospitality Health is a Scottish charity, formed in August 2018 to support staff in the world of hospitality.  It helps those who need support, by providing wellbeing advice, Mental Health First Aid Training and signposting organisations that can help.
