ICAS reveals the 35 top CAs under 35

Laura Mason CA – CA Rising Star 2025

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) has unveiled the winners of its CA Rising Stars competition, recognising the 35 leading Chartered Accountants (CAs) worldwide aged 35 and under.

From a highly competitive field and following a rigorous judging process, Laura Mason CA – assistant manager of public services advisory, financial modelling and data analytics at Grant Thornton – has been named the overall winner and CA Rising Star for 2025.

Although Mason only qualified as a CA last year, the judges praised her impact in using finance to drive social change – from improving access to mental health care to
championing marine sustainability. She will now represent ICAS at the One Young World Summit in Munich, a global forum that brings together young leaders from over 190 countries to tackle the world’s most pressing issues.

Karen Scholes CA, ICAS President and CA Rising Stars judge, said: “Congratulations to Laura on taking top spot. She is an exceptional candidate who applies her varied CA skills to public service, data innovation, global advocacy and social entrepreneurship.

“The judges were impressed by her ability to operate across sectors with purpose-driven impact, as well as her evident passion for sustainability and the potential of new technologies. Laura’s career shows how finance can be a force for public good, making her a true changemaker and voice for the future.”

CA Rising Star 2025 winner, Laura Mason CA, commented: “I’m incredibly honoured to receive this award, and grateful for the support of ICAS and the opportunities that have shaped my journey so far.

“I’ve had the privilege to work across public services, engage in civic advocacy as a Young Ocean Advocate, and contribute to global dialogue through forums like UN Women and the Doha Forum.

“It’s been extremely rewarding to help grow the ICAS network beyond Scotland and champion fresh voices, diverse ideas, and responsible leadership in our profession.”

Three outstanding entrants have also been named as category winners in recognition of their efforts to demonstrate ICAS’ core values and leave a lasting impact in their fields.

  • Changemaker: Naeema Joji CA (Assistant Manager, RSM UK), for championing inclusion, social mobility, and early-career engagement.
  • Ethical Leader: Michael Oates CA (Partner, RSM UK), for his commitment to mentoring and developing new talent.
  • Innovator: Pete Cowan CA (Operations Director, Hall Morrice), for leading best practice in digital transformation.

The remaining 31 Rising Star runners-up represent a diverse group of young CAs who are making a genuine difference to their firms and businesses across sectors ranging from the Big Four to renewables.

Ms Scholes added: “These bright young professionals represent a new, socially aware generation of CAs who have stepped up to confront not only the challenges facing the accountancy profession, but also wider society. At ICAS, we believe the CA qualification is a passport to business that opens doors to exciting and purpose-led career opportunities.

“The exceptional quality of talent showcased by this competition is undeniable proof of this.”

The full shortlist and winners are profiled in the latest edition of ICAS’ monthly publication, CA magazine.
