The Accounting and Business Professional (ABP) is only the third designation introduced in ICAS’ 172-year history, and the only one running in tandem with its core Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification.

The ABP has been developed to widen access to professional recognition while strengthening the long-term CA pipeline. It offers valuable flexibility, enabling learners to complete it as a standalone professional qualification or as a gateway into the full CA programme. It combines the ICAS Certificate in Accounting and Business (CAB) and relevant practical experience, providing a future focused development route that blends technical accounting and business training with real‑world experience.

The programme was designed to be completed in as little as four to 12 months, providing a globally accessible route for developing practical capabilities. It can be delivered flexibly through either ICAS’ award-winning digital platform or through workshop-based learning online or in a training centre.

The qualification supports learners at every stage of their career – from school leavers and graduates to experienced professionals seeking to formalise or update their skills – without requiring an immediate commitment to the full CA qualification.

It also offers a seamless route to the CA status for those who choose to progress, providing full exemption from the first level of the syllabus and helping to build a stronger, more sustainable talent pipeline.

For employers – including Approved Training Offices (ATOs), SMEs and large organisations - the ABP provides a cost-effective way to develop early-career talent, strengthen finance teams and support internal progression, all with minimal operational disruption. The programme has also been designed with an intention to be eligible for Level 4 apprenticeship levy funding in England, which would support employers in making the qualification more accessible and cost-effective.

Individuals who achieve the ABP gain formal credentials from a globally respected body which they can display to enhance their professional profile and identity.
