Irn-Bru maker appoints interim chair as Mark Allen steps down
AG Barr has announced the immediate departure of Mark Allen OBE as non-executive chair and director of the multi-beverage business behind brands such as Irn-Bru, Rubicon, and Boost.
Mr Allen is stepping down to dedicate his attention to his recently extended role as executive chair at Hilton Food Group plc.
In response to this leadership change, the board has initiated an independent process to identify a permanent successor. For the interim period, senior independent director Susan Barratt will assume the role of chair. Concurrently, non-executive director Louise Smalley will step into the position of senior independent director to support the transition.
Mr Allen’s tenure with the Cumbernauld-based company began when he joined as a non-executive director in July 2021, before being appointed chair in March 2022. His diverse career history includes early service in the police force and a law degree, followed by significant corporate experience at Shell and a long-standing tenure as CEO of Dairy Crest. Reflecting on his departure, Mr Allen noted it had been a privilege to serve during a period of brand innovation and strategic growth, stating that the business is in “great shape” as he passes the baton.
Incoming interim chair Susan Barratt said: “On behalf of the board, I would like to express our gratitude to Mark for his outstanding contribution and dedicated service to AG Barr over the last five years.
“He has built and led a high-quality Board and advanced the strategic direction for the business. He leaves AG Barr in a strong position, and we wish him all the best for the future.”
The company confirmed it intends to issue a trading update for the financial year ending 31 January 2026 on 3 February, with final results to follow in March.
