Johnston Carmichael grows audit team with Big Four talent

Matt Kaye

Johnston Carmichael has expanded its audit team with the appointment of Matt Kaye as new audit partner.

Mr Kaye joins from a Big Four audit team, bringing nearly two decades of extensive experience advising large owner managed business clients across a variety of sectors and leading key client accounts. He will be based in Johnston Carmichael’s Edinburgh office.

Mr Kaye’s experience includes three years of working in Australia and his addition comes as the firm’s audit team continues to expand under the leadership of Graham Marjoribanks.

Mr Kaye said: “Johnston Carmichael’s profile and presence in the audit market, and the clients they work with, really attracted me to the role.

“As a partner at Johnston Carmichael, I’ll have a hands-on role with all my clients, and I will also be considering how they could benefit from the wider expertise across the firm. By taking a proactive approach to understanding the needs and strategic ambitions of businesses, we are able to introduce additional services that can add value – a real differentiator in the marketplace.

“The culture feels supportive and has a ‘one firm’ approach across the office network, and I’m keen to help grow our audit offering even further.

“I want to continue working with large companies across Scotland and beyond, and Johnston Carmichael feels like the perfect place to do that.”

Graham Marjoribanks, partner and head of audit & assurance at Johnston Carmichael, said: “It’s great to welcome Matt to Johnston Carmichael, and his extensive experience and skillset across a range of sectors is a perfect fit for our audit team and the direction we are going in.

“Matt will bring the energy and approach with clients we value at Johnston Carmichael, which we feel truly sets us apart.”

Mr Marjoribanks added: “Our audit team has seen significant growth over the last 12 months, with key senior hires creating a specialist team of over 230 audit professionals across Scotland, Newcastle and London. Welcoming Matt on board further reinforces our bench strength across our markets.

“It’s an exciting time for the firm as we grow with these new hires, continue to develop our talent pipeline, and build on our success across 2024 and beyond.”

The firm last year welcomed technology risk and assurance partner Stephen Harrison to its audit team as part of its strategic growth plans.

Mr Harrison, who specialises in technology risk, is based in Glasgow, and works in Johnston Carmichael’s audit team as well as collaborating closely with its consultancy specialists as the business grows its suite of risk advisory and assurance services.

The firm also appointed partner Bryan Shepka and director Gill Boston, who specialise in client assets (CASS) assurance audits for financial services.
