Johnston Carmichael has appointed Stewart Pennington as head of Edinburgh office, reinforcing the firm’s leadership in the capital.

Mr Pennington is an experienced Chartered Accountant with extensive expertise in SME accounting and taxation. He joined Johnston Carmichael in July 2007, becoming a partner in 2019, and has played a significant role in the firm’s development over the past 18 years.

Managing a broad portfolio of clients, providing accounting, tax and business advisory services, Mr Pennington has focussed on helping businesses and individuals achieve their ambitions, whether that involves growth, adoption of new technologies or long-term succession planning.

His appointment comes at an important time for the firm, with Edinburgh continuing to be a key market for clients across a wide range of sectors.

Edinburgh has grown to become Johnston Carmichael’s largest location supporting a team of more than 220 people. Over the last year, 33 graduates have joined the office, demonstrating Johnston Carmichael’s ongoing commitment to investing in the capital’s future talent.

Alongside his role as head of Edinburgh, Mr Pennington serves as deputy head of food and drink for the firm. Johnston Carmichael currently works with more than 540 food and drink businesses, providing specialist advice across one of Scotland’s most important sectors.

Mr Pennington succeeds Mark Stewart as head of Edinburgh. Mr Stewart will continue with Johnston Carmichael in his role as partner and head of energy, infrastructure and sustainability.

Mr Pennington said: “I’m proud to take on the role of head of Edinburgh at a firm that has played such an important part in my career. The depth of talent within our Edinburgh team is clear and is underpinned by a culture that values collaboration and long-term relationships.

“Looking ahead, the focus will be to build on the strong foundations already in place, continuing to deliver high-quality advice, and supporting businesses and individuals as they plan for the future.

“Developing the next generation of leaders is also a key priority for me. We have a responsibility to create meaningful opportunities for emerging professionals, and I’m keen to continue supporting our graduates and future leaders as they build their careers with the firm.”

Lynne Walker, CEO at Johnston Carmichael, said: “Stewart’s appointment recognises the contribution he has made across almost 20 years with the firm, as well as the respect he holds among both colleagues and clients. He brings strong leadership, sound judgement and a deep, comprehensive understanding of the market.

“Edinburgh remains a strategically important location for Johnston Carmichael, and Stewart’s experience will be instrumental in supporting the ongoing development of the office. We are also proud of the specialist capability we have built in sectors such as food and drink, and Stewart’s expertise in this area further strengthens our offering to clients.”
