Why did you chose to work in the finance sector and how and did you get started in the industry?

Started in Finance (Banking) when I was 20, prior to this I had a few jobs but decided I wanted to work in an industry where I could have career progression and banking seemed like a great opportunity to fulfil this. I applied to a leading high street bank and got accepted. I worked my way up the ladder then got the opportunity to move to Jumpstart. This was an ideal role as it allowed me to continue to support SME businesses and expand my knowledge.

Who or what has been the greatest professional influence in your life?

I wouldn’t say any one particular person, I have had a lot of good managers & colleagues over the years and learned something from them all. I have been fortunate to have dealt with a lot of great business people and each has played a part in influencing me as a person.

Your best and worst professional experience?

Best experience was qualifying for an annual achievers award and having an all expenses paid trip to Barcelona where Neil Armstrong was guest speaker. The worst was being head hunted for a role and accepting only to be told 90 days in that the entire team was being made redundant.

What’s the best advice you received, either personalor professional?

Not to take decisions in business personally.

What do you like most and least about your job?

I love dealing with people and finding out about their businesses and helping them, I dislike paperwork and spreadsheets as this detracts from me doing the first thing.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in finance?

Although finance has changed massively over the last few years there is still tremendous amounts of opportunity to progress in this sector. Like any business it has its ups and downs but overall there is a long term career and good progression opportunities if you are prepared to work for them.

What you would most like to change in the industry?

More awareness of support available, things like the R&D scheme’s and support such as grants available to SME businesses.

Are you pessimistic or optimistic about the economic outlook in the wake of last June’s Brexit vote?

I’m an optimist by nature so I always look for the positives, there will be upsides and downsides for a while but overall we are a great nation and think long term it will be good.

Which social media sites do you use?

Linkedin, Facebook & Twitter, although I do struggle a bit more with Twitter.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of the office?

Having 3 young kids I don’t have much time for hobbies & interests but when I do find time I enjoy golf & badminton. I have a love of cars.

What job would you want to do if you were not in finance?

Something to do with cars, the glamorous side like motor racing, test driver for Ferrari or something exciting like that.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

Florida as it has lots of sunshine and plenty of things to do like theme & water parks.
