Malcolm Morrison, MD of GMG Energy, the Sutherland-based environmentally friendly timber products company and a leading figure in range of other businesses throughout Scotland and England, is one of three nominees for the accolade of Business Leader of the Year at the 2025 Highland Business Awards.

According to the organisers, the Inverness Chamber of Commerce, The Business Leader of the Year should be someone “with a track record of leading and inspiring others, who makes a difference to the Highland business economy through their commitment and passion for the area as well as the industry in which they operate”.

The Awards, which will be announced in Inverness on Friday 26 September, will see Mr Morrison competing for the Business Leader of the Year title alongside Pentland Ferries’ MD, Helen Inkster and Fraser Campbell, MD of Cobbs Group a Loch Ness based hospitality retail and wholesale bakery business. The award sponsors are business advisers, Saffery.

With a career spanning agriculture, banking, renewable energy, hospitality, and business advisory, Mr Morrison’s leadership style is characterised by a clear sense of purpose, strategic vision, and a deep commitment to empowering others.

As director of GMG Energy, Mr Morrison has built a sustainable timber products business from the ground up in Halladale, Caithness. Under his guidance, the company has embraced cutting-edge technology, including AI-powered security and biomass innovation, while championing environmental responsibility through zero-waste policies and active replanting efforts.

At Melvich Bay Caravan Park, which Mr Morrison co-founded in 2024, he has turned an environmental ethos into a practical business strategy – offering sustainable tourism options along the North Coast 500 and installing modern grey waste systems to encourage responsible travel.

He is also a trusted advisor to several businesses including a Highlands-based food and drink business, an Inverclyde print company, and East of Scotland Growers, where he helped pioneer the conversion of vegetables into successful retail snack products now sold in Sainsbury’s. He offers these ventures not only strategic insight, but the confidence to persevere and succeed.

He said: “I am very pleased to have been nominated for this award and look forward to meeting my fellow nominees where, I hope we will join in celebrating the importance of successful businesses in the Highlands and their contribution to the greater good of the Highlands community.”
