Glasgow-born business celebrity Michelle Mone has revealed plans to sell luxury flats in Dubai through bitcoin as part of a £250 million venture believed to be a global first.

The project is being carried out with her billionaire boyfriend Douglas Barrowman as the pair develop two apartment blocks and a shopping mall, with plans to sell 150 of the homes using the currency.

Baroness Mone said: “This is the first major development selling to the bitcoin community. It is exciting for that world that two well-known successful business people are backing it in a major development.”

Due to complete in 2019, Aston Plaza and Residences comprises 1,133 one and two-bedroom apartments.

The two 40-storey towers are currently being built in the centre of the city’s Science Park, and the first 150 appartments are on sale now at a rate starting at $133,000, or £102,000.

Announcing the sale, Mone said she and her parnter were “big fans” of bitcoin and hold some of their own wealth in the digital currency.

“I really believe these 150 (apartments) will sell out at the speed of light”, she added.
