SCC boss receives honorary doctorate

Scottish Chambers of Commerce chief executive Liz Cameron OBE yesterday received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) at its graduation ceremony at Paisley Abbey, in recognition of her distinguished career at the forefront of Scottish business.

UWS said the honour recognised Ms Cameron as one of the most influential business leaders in Scotland, who has a truly local, national and global profile, and is widely credited as Scotland’s voice of business.

The university said: “Liz’s unyielding commitment to promoting Scotland as a great place for business has inspired and motivated entrepreneurs and business leaders alike, reinvigorating entrepreneurial spirit across Scotland and the UK.

“From transforming Scotland’s approach to skills development and economic growth, to expanding Scotland’s profile internationally, Liz is a pioneering ambassador, successfully establishing global Scottish Trade Offices and building stronger economic relationships with countries across the world.

“Liz Cameron’s passion is firmly rooted in nurturing entrepreneurship as a route to improving life chances and she personally mentors several aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders. Liz serves as the Chair of WEVOLUTION, a global charity promoting entrepreneurship, and is on the ‘Brain Trust’ of TEDxGlasgow. Liz has previously served as the Vice Chair of the Scottish National Lottery Fund and was a former member of University of the West of Scotland Court.”

Ms Cameron, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2014 for her outstanding contributions to business, said: “It is a great honour to be recognised by the University of the West of Scotland, particularly as the institution’s international outlook and commitment to innovation and research, are firmly aligned with my values in business. I am delighted to accept this award and I thank all those who I have learned from and collaborated with over the years. I look forward to galvanising civic Scotland to embrace UWS’s spirit of Dream, Believe and Achieve.”
