Scottish financial services sector welcomes Edinburgh’s G20 finance meeting

Sandy Begbie welcomed the news

The UK Government has announced Edinburgh will host the G20’s annual finance meeting next summer.

Central bank governors and finance meetings will meet at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on July 8 and July 9, as part of a series of events around the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Manchester in November 2027.

It will be the second time the finance conference was held in Scotland. It was last held in 2009 at St Andrew amid the Recession

Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey said: “As the UK’s second financial centre, Edinburgh is a fitting host for the G20 finance meeting. Alongside the Leaders’ Summit in Manchester, and other meetings around the nations and regions, the G20 is a real opportunity for the whole of the UK.”

Members of the G20, which comprises 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade, include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and the African Union.

This year’s meeting was held in Asheville, North Carolina, where European leaders criticised Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov’s attendance.

Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander said the UK’s presidency was a “huge opportunity for the whole of the country. Bringing the world’s finance ministers to Edinburgh recognises our capital’s reputation as a global financial centre.

“This is a significant moment for Edinburgh and the whole of Scotland - the event showcases Scottish innovation and ambition to a global audience.”

Scottish Financial Enterprise, chief executive Sandy Begbie, said: “This announcement is recognition of Scotland’s position as the UK’s largest financial services centre outside London. With over 157,000 people employed across the sector, £17.7bn generated annually in GVA for the Scottish economy and $540bn in assets under management, Scotland and Edinburgh are ideally placed to host the G20 Finance Ministers.

“For almost 400 years, Scotland’s finance industry has been leading and shaping financial services around the world. Given the challenges facing the world today, it is fitting that Edinburgh has been chosen to host this meeting.”
