Tax digitisation plans to be delayed further

Troubled UK government plans to digitise the income tax self-assessment process are being delayed for a further two years, according to reports.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) was set to be introduced from April 2024 but the government is expected to announce the deadline will be pushed to April 2026, The Times reports.

A notice to that effect was briefly published on a UK government website before being removed.

It is a further delay to the introduction of MTD ITSA, which was first announced in 2015 and was previously due to be introduced by April 2023.

Jim Harra, chief executive of HMRC, told MPs last month that the 2024 deadline was “under review” as it was “quite pressured, both internally on HMRC being ready, but also the external readiness of software houses and small businesses”.
