BDO appointed to liquidate acclaimed Edinburgh restaurant La Garrigue

James Stephen and Simon Girling of accountancy firm BDO LLP have been appointed joint liquidators of La Garrigue, a French bistro that served Edinburgh diners for 25 years before closing last year.

The restaurant, situated in Jeffrey Street in the Scottish capital, was founded by Jean Michel Gauffre, who had previously worked in high-profile roles at a number of luxury hotels before opening his own establishment.

Over the course of its life, La Garrigue earned widespread recognition, including a place on Gordon Ramsay’s Best Restaurants, with the celebrity chef reportedly counting it among his favourite French bistros. The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce described it as one of the city’s most celebrated French restaurants.

A spokesperson for the liquidators confirmed that the business had ceased trading prior to their appointment owing to prolonged difficult trading conditions. The winding up petition was presented to Edinburgh Sheriff Court by the company itself. The liquidators are continuing to work on realising the company’s assets in line with their statutory duties. Mr Gauffre is said to now divide his time between consultancy work in Scotland and wine tours in the south of France, The Herald reports.

La Garrigue’s closure reflects broader pressures bearing down on Scotland’s hospitality sector. Rising staff costs and tax increases have created sustained headwinds for restaurants, pubs, and clubs across the country. The Scottish Hospitality Group has called for improved taxation support, with its director Stephen Montgomery warning last month that the impacts of rates increases will be felt across the country for years to come.
