Dundee bus firm to cease trading, axing over 20 jobs

Dundee-based bus and coach operator Fishers Tours is set to cease trading by Friday, resulting in an anticipated loss of over 20 jobs and leaving staff in a state of shock.

The sudden announcement, delivered to drivers and mechanics on Monday morning, has been described by sources as coming “out of the blue”.

The company, one of the largest private coach hire firms in Dundee, holds significant contracts with local councils, including the transportation of hundreds of pupils to and from schools in Dundee and Angus. The impending closure has sparked concerns amongst drivers about the potential impact on children’s ability to get to school, with one employee stating they were “willing to work” to minimise disruption.

Staff members have criticised what they termed a “smoke and mirrors” communication approach from management in recent months, with one driver expressing a feeling of being “totally helpless”. Another employee recounted being called into a meeting at 6:50 am on Monday where the imminent shutdown was announced, leaving everyone “completely shocked”. They told The Courier: “That’s more than 20 drivers and mechanics who won’t have jobs next week. How is that fair?”

There were reportedly signs of trouble, with mechanics allegedly instructed not to order parts and numerous booked jobs cancelled at short notice, with customers being told of “technical issues” – a claim disputed by the staff member.

Fishers Tours, which also provided travel for events such as concerts and football matches, had a turnover of approximately £2.3 million in 2024 and recorded a pre-tax loss of £34,000, according to their latest accounts. This contrasts with a profit of £96,000 reported in 2023.

Company bosses confirmed the closure to The Courier but declined to offer further comment on the circumstances. While the firm’s social media presence has been removed, its website remained online at the time of reporting.

A spokesperson for Dundee City Council acknowledged awareness of the situation, stating: “We have been aware of the situation and are currently looking at the details.”

Fishers Tours was taken over in 2000 by the late Jim and Kay Cosgrove, who passed away in 2021 and 2017 respectively. According to Companies House, Carrie Ann Telfer is the current director of the company.
