Edinburgh's Margiotta to open new store following £725k HSBC funding

Margiotta, a family-run independent convenience retailer in Edinburgh, is poised to grow its footprint, backed by a £725,000 investment from HSBC UK.

The new shop will be situated in the Shandon area’s Harrison Gardens, the site of a former architecture firm. This marks the company’s second establishment in Shandon, with the original store to remain operational as a newsagent confectioner, now enhanced with homemade gelato, paninis, and artisan coffee.

The new premises, boasting 2,000 sq ft, nearly double the size of its existing Shandon outlet, will facilitate an expanded offering of local goods. Local producers including Fortitude Coffee and Heather Hills Honey will feature in the store alongside an extensive range of homeware products.

Managing director Franco Margiotta founded the store with his brother in the early 1970s, starting with a single shop in Marchmont selling food and wine. The family business now operates 10 stores across Edinburgh and East Lothian, with the Harrison Gardens store marking their 11th outlet.

Mr Margiotta said: “Both we and our customers value local produce from quality suppliers, so we’re looking forward to being able to expand our product range with our increased footprint.

“HSBC UK’s support has helped us to grasp the opportunity to buy this new space, and explore a new venture as we bring to life our first café-style venture at our older store.”

The new store, set to open in summer 2023, is projected to create between 16 to 20 new jobs. The retailer currently collaborates with over 45 local suppliers.

Ash McBrearty, corporate relationship director at HSBC UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see an independent business born and bred in Edinburgh grow and thrive.

“We’ve enjoyed working with the Margiotta family to help them expand their retail portfolio and diversify their offering.”
