Scottish Arbitration Centre launches new mediation service

The Scottish Arbitration Centre has launched a new mediation service to enhance its dispute resolution offering.

Following the publication of its Mediation Rules in September, the centre has now launched the service. The service provides a new administered mediation scheme to support businesses and organisations in Scotland and across the world. The centre’s charges for the service are a filing fee of £500 and administrative fees of £100 an hour. Under the scheme, the parties and the mediator will agree the mediator’s fees among themselves.

The centre can also offer additional services, including room hire for mediations and the provision of ancillary services.

The administration of the Mediation Rules will be overseen by the Court of the Scottish Arbitration Centre, with support from registrar Duncan Bagshaw, deputy registrar Rebecca Wyke and the wider centre staff team.

Speaking at the ‘Toast to the Year’ joint networking event hosted by the centre and Ciarb Scottish Branch in Edinburgh on 18 December, Gillian Carmichael Lemaire, chair of the board of the centre, said: “I am delighted we are today launching our new mediation service. Like many international arbitration institutions, we also want to offer mediation services, which we consider to be an important mainstream method beneficial to our users.

“The centre’s principles on diversity, equality and sustainability are built into our new Mediation Rules but much of our approach to administered mediation will be familiar to those using other mediation rules. We hope that adding mediation to our range of services will assist users and allow for further growth within the centre.”

Andrew Mackenzie, CEO of the centre, added: “The centre launched its Arbitration Rules and administrative services at ICCA Edinburgh in 2022, and the Mediation Rules and administrative services will add to our offering to the market in Scotland and internationally.”
