Virgin Money and Scottish Agritourism have joined forces to launch a new business plan skills support programme, designed to support the continued growth and resilience of Scotland’s agritourism sector.
This initiative recognises the increasingly important role agritourism plays for farming businesses across Scotland, helping to diversify income, strengthen rural economies and support long-term farm sustainability. It also comes at a key moment for the sector, following the Scottish Government’s recent announcement of significant funding for the Scottish Agritourism Investment Scheme.
The programme will provide agritourism and farm retail businesses within the Scottish Agritourism membership with dedicated support from Virgin Money’s specialist agricultural team. The focus is on building confidence and skills in developing clear, well-structured and compelling business plans to support future investment and funding applications.

Stephen Buchan, head of agriculture (Scotland) at Virgin Money, announced the development of the programme at the Scottish Agritourism Conference in November. The first cohort will see 20 member businesses paired with a dedicated Virgin Money agricultural advisor, who will provide tailored feedback and guidance. The aim is for all participating businesses to complete a robust business plan by the end of March.
Mr Buchan said: “Agritourism is now hugely important to so many farming businesses across Scotland, providing valuable additional income streams and helping farms adapt and thrive in a changing environment.
“For banks, well thought-through, clear and accurate business plans, supported by strong financial data and a clear narrative, are essential to successful applications for finance. These plans need to engage decision-makers quickly. Being asked to produce a business plan can be daunting, particularly if it’s not something you’ve done before, and this programme is designed to help build confidence and capability.
“This support will be open to all Scottish Agritourism members. Even those not seeking finance immediately can strengthen their skills now, with a view to applying for funding in the future.”
Caroline Millar, sector lead at Scottish Agritourism, added: “Agritourism has become fundamental to the success of many farming businesses across Scotland, and it is fantastic to see just how many are planning to invest and grow.
“Our agritourism sector census, completed in August 2025, received responses from 215 agritourism and farm retail businesses. Together, these businesses are planning £200 million of capital investment over the next two years. That figure clearly demonstrates the scale, ambition and confidence within the sector.
“Working in partnership with Virgin Money, our members can prepare for this investment with clear, engaging and well-structured business plans that will help them secure funding to grow and develop their businesses. We are extremely grateful to Stephen Buchan and the Virgin Money Agriculture team for sharing their expertise and supporting our members in this way.”
The Business Plan Skills Support Programme is now open, and Scottish Agritourism members are invited to register their interest via the Scottish Agritourism website.
