In a letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey, she has called for “fair compensation” for the 3.5 million women born in the 1950s who were affected by “historic failures to properly communicate increases in their state pension age”.

Madden wants Waspi women to receive “fair redress” within “the constraints of the public purse”.

As reported by FT Adviser, she also highlighted personal assurances received from Burnham during the Makerfield by-election campaign.

“We were grateful to receive personal assurances from Andy during the Makerfield by-election that addressing this injustice was something he was committed to carrying out,” she said.

“While recognising the new prime minister has a long list of things to fix, we are now asking him, alongside the chancellor, to make good on that promise, and to sit down with Waspi to determine what redress for 1950s-born women looks like.”

Labour in opposition had supported the Waspi campaign group which secured a parliamentary ombudsman ruling in favour of their claim that they were not adequately informed of changes to the state pension age.
