Aon launches inaugural Work Insights Programme for Glasgow students

The inaugural Work Insights Programme cohort

Global professional services firm Aon plc has rolled out its inaugural UK Work Insights Programme in Glasgow, aimed at enhancing social mobility and career opportunities for students aged 16 to 17.

The programme, a blend of virtual and in-person training, welcomed 13 students from varied socio-economic backgrounds in its first batch.

The initiative offered interactive learning sessions, panels, group projects, skills workshops, and networking opportunities, all of which were facilitated by Aon employees. Students gained insights into the workings of the insurance industry and the variety of roles available therein, understanding the importance of networking and fostering a healthy work culture.

Ross Mackay, Aon’s Glasgow head of office, said: “Aon is committed to creating greater equity and inclusion across its business and to making a positive difference in the local community. It has been great hosting our first cohort of Glasgow students on the UK Work Insights Programme.

“All of them have been a credit to their schools and colleges and have been fully engaged in the learning programme. I hope that they have gained valuable experience, developed new skills, and gained a better understanding of our industry and of the many fulfilling roles available – all to support their future career choices.

“Several Aon colleagues in Glasgow have supported and mentored the students throughout the programme and I thank them for their support. It wouldn’t have been possible to deliver the Work Insights Programme and to create opportunities for students in Glasgow without them.”

Adam Murad, 16, from Glasgow, said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time on the Aon Work Insights Programme. Over the course of the week, I have learned about the insurance industry and the opportunities open to me, gained an understanding of the benefits of networking, of being part of a good work culture, and having a plan for the future.

“I’ve most enjoyed the group work and the networking with Aon colleagues who have provided insight into the professional services sector and the roles available.

“I feel incredibly lucky to be one of the first Glasgow students to attend the work experience programme. As a student, you should definitely grasp any opportunity offered to you, and I would highly recommend that anyone eligible should apply for the programme as it will be hugely beneficial.”

As part of this initiative, the firm collaborated with state-funded schools in Glasgow to reach pupils who would benefit most – adopting a selection process based on diversity statistics, such as areas with a high percentage of free school meals. The next programme is slated for October, during the half-term break.
