Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has appointed CMS as its legal partner to provide advice and support in delivering a successful global sporting event in Scotland’s biggest city next summer.

The Games, which take place 23 July to 2 August 2026, will mark a new era for Commonwealth Sport and how global sporting competitions are staged, bringing together 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories to compete across 10 sports and six Para sports, with more than 200 medals to be won in 51 medal sessions.

An international law firm with a strong Glasgow presence, CMS will act as the Games’ official and sole legal partner advising the organising company on all operational contracts and legal work to operate, host and maximise commercial opportunities for the city of Glasgow for the global games.

As part of the new Games delivery model, which will provide a replicable framework for future hosts across the Commonwealth, two CMS colleagues, Scott Moir and Angus Niven, have taken a role within the organising company to maximise efficiency. The firm has also supported the launch of the Glasgow 2026 official mascot, Finnie, via CMS’ trademark team.

Along with providing advice, support and legal services, CMS will also support colleagues from Glasgow and its other Scottish offices to get involved in a wide range of volunteering opportunities over the course of the Games.

CMS operates in over 40 countries across the world with more than 80 offices including three in Scotland in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Alan Nelson, acting managing director of CMS Scotland, said: “The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be the highest profile event in Scotland next summer and will offer huge potential to deliver positive change and a long-lasting legacy for the city of Glasgow.

“CMS is honoured to be part of this event where we will support the Organising Company in delivering a successful and impacting Games.”

Phil Batty OBE, chief executive, Glasgow 2026, said: “It’s great to welcome CMS to not only our sponsor portfolio, but into our Organising Company. Delivering an event of this scale requires world-class expertise across every area of operations, and legal services are no exception.

“Having CMS as our official legal partner ensures we are supported by a team with local knowledge and an outstanding global reputation in their sector, I look forward to a successful partnership.”

Faye Shaw, chief financial and corporate services officer, Glasgow 2026, added: “This partnership with CMS gives us world-class legal expertise right in the heart of our team.

“Embedding CMS colleagues directly into our organisation is a vital part of our delivery model and it means that we benefit from their expertise day to day, allowing us to move quickly, make confident decisions and focus on delivering an unforgettable Games.”
