Wbg launches internal entrepreneurial ecosystem ahead of Global Entrepreneurship Week

Glasgow-headquartered Wbg is developing its own internal entrepreneurial ecosystem in response to a record boom in Scottish startups.

The initiative launches ahead of Global Entrepreneurship Week (17-23 November).

The latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Scotland has revealed that entrepreneurship in Scotland has reached a new milestone with one in ten adults now starting or running a young company, and a Business Hotspots 2025 report has shown that Glasgow has retained its top spot as the most popular place to start a business in Scotland, with 22 companies created every day during the opening six months of the year.

Gordon Merrylees, head of entrepreneurship at Wbg, said: “Global Entrepreneurship Week is a worldwide celebration aimed at empowering entrepreneurs in every country and community around the world – especially those individuals who face structural barriers or may have never considered the idea of launching a startup.

“Its purpose is to inspire people to explore their potential as entrepreneurs and innovators by connecting them with opportunities, mentors, and potential collaborators.

“Having given some consideration to what might comprise an ecosystem for an entrepreneur – such as commercial insurance or lending broker, lawyer, accountant, wealth manager/IFA, recruitment, HR compliance, technology support and cyber security, and access to accelerator incubator programmes – as a firm we are seeking to develop that ecosystem for our expanding client base by building relationships with partners to deliver areas of specialist expertise to entrepreneurs.”

Already Wbg has formed a strategic partnership with Entrepreneurial Scotland, the independent charity with a vision to build the most entrepreneurial society in the world. The arrangement sees the firm become Entrepreneurial Scotland’s exclusive accountancy partner, providing guidance, mentorship and support to the charity and its members.

And Wbg recently introduced a new technology services offering to support its client base of UK SMEs. The launch of Wbg Technology Services, in partnership with its information and communication technology services provider, NVT Group, will provide an offering of IT managed services including hardware, software and cyber support through professional services to clients.

“Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of Scotland’s economy, and we see tremendous potential through these partnerships to support their business growth ambitions by offering them specialised accounting, advisory, audit and tax expertise to help them start, scale and succeed,” said Mr Merrylees.

“The further development of a comprehensive entrepreneurial ecosystem will accelerate entrepreneurs’ growth ambitions within and beyond Scotland by increasing their accessibility to a broad range business and financial expertise.”

Wbg’s bespoke entrepreneurial ecosystem will complement the recently launched Scottish Ecosystem Platform, providing the first comprehensive, open access platform to provide detailed information on startups, scale-ups and established private companies.

A free, open-access digital platform providing comprehensive data and up-to-date information on startups, scaleups, corporates, investors, accelerators, universities and more, the Scottish Ecosystem Platform is accessible here: https://scotland.dealroom.co.
