Aldi now Scotland's third biggest supermarket by volume

Aldi is Scotland’s third biggest supermarket by number of units sold, according to new figures from Kantar.

The store is set to make it 13th appearance at the country’s famous Royal Highland Show this week to showcase the success of their Scottish range.

As the discount retailer unveils its lineup of Scottish suppliers attending the event, new data from Kantar reveals its volume share of the grocery market has increased to 11%, moving ahead of Morrisons and Sainsbury’s for the first time.

Aldi Scotland now commands a higher volume market share than Co-op (7.2%), Sainsbury’s (7.6%), Lidl (8.9%) and Morrisons (8.8%), in Scotland, behind only Asda (13.8%) and Tesco (24%). The data, which is collected by research body Kantar, looked at volume market share over a 12-week period until 14th May.

Aldi will once again be taking up a prominent position with its marquee on Avenue O30(P), where it will exhibit 18 of its Scottish suppliers, giving visitors the chance to sample some of the country’s finest local produce from brands such as Browning’s the Bakers, Eden Mill, Stockan’s Oatcakes and Angus Soft Fruits.

Graham Nicolson, group buying director, Aldi Scotland, said: “This is a momentous moment for Aldi in Scotland, as we continue to build our presence within the Scottish market. We are committed to offering our customers top quality products at affordable prices and as the data shows people are switching to shopping with Aldi in their droves.

“We are very proud of the strong relationship we have built with our Scottish suppliers, which gives our customers the opportunity to purchase locally sourced high-quality products and support Scottish businesses.”
